Benford’s law: Applications to ordinary‐chondrite mass distributions

چکیده
Abstract For ordinary‐chondrite (OC) mass distributions, Benford’s law applies to the set of individual objects that survive intact on Earth’s surface after atmospheric disruption meteoroids. Among OCs, Antarctic finds conform more closely than observed falls, Northwest Africa (NWA) finds, or Oman mainly because OCs tend be relatively unweathered (and mostly intact) and have not been aggregated as pairs under collective meteorite names. Deviations from can result tampering with data sets. The OC falls reflects original Benford distribution (produced by meteoroid disruption) deliberate aggregation paired samples inefficiencies in collection small samples. sets NWA affected natural “tampering” distributions principally terrestrial weathering, which cause sample disintegration. were also non‐systematic influenced commercial considerations; collectors preferred type‐3 revealed high proportions such specimens among chondrites relative those finds. percentage type‐4 is appreciably lower This suggests are friable disintegrate into numerous pieces; these counted individually for but collectively falls. However, fact percentages generally higher may break pieces preferentially lost.

Generalizing Benfords Law Using Power Laws: Application to Integer Sequences
A simple method to derive parametric analytical extensions of Benfords law for first digits of numerical data is proposed. Two generalized Benford distributions are considered, namely the two-sided power Benford (TSPB) distribution, which has been introduced in Hürlimann(2003), and the new Pareto Benford (PB) distribution. Based on the minimum chisquare estimators, the fitting capabilities of ...

متن کاملSampling power-law distributions
Power-law distributions describe many phenomena related to rock fracture. Data collected to measure the parameters of such distributions only represent samples from some underlying population. Without proper consideration of the scale and size limitations of such data, estimates of the population parameters, particularly the exponent D, are likely to be biased. A Monte Carlo simulation of the s...

متن کاملThe Weighted Exponentiated Family of Distributions: Properties, Applications and Characterizations
In this paper a new method of introducing an additional parameter to a continuous distribution is proposed, which leads to a new class of distributions, called the weighted exponentiated family. A special sub-model is discussed. General expressions for some of the mathematical properties of this class such as the moments, quantile function, generating function and order statistics are derived;...
